Taobao, China’s largest e-commerce platform, has been growing in popularity among consumers outside Mainland China since its inception in 2003. With its wide array of products, Taobao offers almost everything imaginable. Although it’s possible to shop on Taobao through Taobao agents without registering an account, certain functions like Taobao image search or contacting Taobao sellers require an account.
However, for non-native Chinese speakers, registering on Taobao can pose a significant challenge. Today, we will demonstrate how to register on Taobao.

Does Taobao Support Email Registration?
Currently, Taobao does not support email registration. Registration can only be done using a mobile phone number. Although later in this article I discuss attempting to register using an email, I was not successful.
Taobao now supports mobile phone number registrations from many countries outside Mainland China. It’s best not to use a VPN during registration, as this can easily lead to account freezing.

Web Taobao Account Registration
Visit the Taobao website and go to https://world.taobao.com/, click on “注册领红包 (Register & Get Bonus)”.
Once you enter the registration page, you can switch to the English interface in the top right corner. Then, find your country, select the country code, enter your mobile phone number, and click on “Request Verification Code”. You will receive a verification code on your phone, enter it, then click on “Agree and Register”.
Congratulations, you have successfully registered.
Registering Taobao on Mobile APP
First, you need to download the Taobao APP from the Apple Store or Google Play.
After opening it, click on “立即登录(Login)” at the bottom right corner.
Then select your country’s dialing code. This section is only in Chinese, so if you don’t understand Chinese, you can select it by your country’s dialing code. Enter your mobile phone number and click on “Register now”.
Next, receive the mobile verification code and enter it. Congratulations, you have successfully registered.
How to Use Taobao Without Logging In?
If you haven’t registered a Taobao account and can’t log in, you can still browse products on the web version of Taobao and even use the search function. However, you will continuously receive prompts asking you to log in, which you can close and continue to use the site. This way, you can copy the product links and place orders through a Taobao agent.

But without logging in, the Taobao APP cannot be used normally.
How to Register for Taobao without a Phone Number?
Strictly speaking, Taobao can only be registered using a phone number, as the official Taobao registration process does not include an option for email registration. However, we discovered the Taobao Lite App, a simplified version of the Taobao App specifically designed for Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and international users.
When you click on the “注册/登录 (Register/Login)” option at the bottom of the app,
it presents several commonly used quick login options, such as Facebook, Google, LINE, and Apple accounts, allowing you to use these nearly ubiquitous accounts for Taobao registration and login.
However, after several attempts by Taotao, it was found that the account gets immediately frozen upon logging into Taobao. This might be due to incorrect operation on my part, but it is an option worth exploring for those who like to experiment.
